A depth-data-driven brand experience

That’s a whacky mouthful. About a year ago, a client came to us with a need to refresh their brand. Through a few concept phases it became evident that this would be a perfect case for the brand to exist as the product’s behavior. I used trapcode form in after effects to create what you see below. Check it out fullscreen to see the details of the texture. The behavior of the lines reveal that they are much more complex geometric figures. Akin to Marc Shillum’s piece on Brands as Patterns, these reactive contours are the keystone of Softkinetic’s identity.

This video was developed for three purposes. One: to help convey a concept for a brand interaction splash to the client. The thought is that this could be used as a bumper before an application that uses this technology starts up (Not this video, the real thing). Two: to show how the brand identity can be extended. More appropriately, this motion concept redefined the identity itself. Three: this also acted as an early technical planning guide. It turned out to be amazingly useful in this way. It not only helped my formulate my architecture, but also helped me describe the steps that I would likely need to take to the directors. This is a exactly why after effects is such a fundamental part of my work.

Last winter, I began working on a functional prototype. The following is a compilation of the process. I used cinder and many principles from various contributors all of whom I hope I’ve properly cited.

I haven’t posted for some time but I have been busy on this. Here are a few snaps. Processing libraries abandoned. I am pretty busy working on optimizations right now since this thing isn’t capable of running on a stream of infinite entries yet.

Dimes Visualization – Part 1

The following is inspired by the work of Chris Harrison and the beginning of a series of pieces i will demonstrate to show my progress through this exploration.

During this work more ideas have kind of surfaced so I’m just going to run with it. This was built using the processing core and restlet framework to to access and display the coordinates from the city node data gathered from the dimes REST web service. You are seeing the first 5 or 6 weeks of their db being shown in about a minute. It continues to query the hundreds of thousands of entries over time. This is also my first experience working with multi-threading. It has been an absolute joy and even somewhat epiphanic for the sake of having a truly dedicated animation thread. More to come.

SVN + MediaTemple

I want to start out by talking a little bit about an important part of the dev process for this site that makes things extremely easy on my brainpart. using and configuring SVN stuff might make you want to poke your eyes out at times. I totally understand that. But thankfully, I have some friends that force me to see the light from time to time.

Here’s the skinny. I use subclipse since i’m a as3 guy and eventually this site will naturally contain a great deal of flash for front-end, so what i want to do is have a repository on my gridserver and be able to svn up my live source.

You’ll find that there is some conflicting material and if you get frustrated with the eclipse part, jump to bit-101. His stuff finally set me straight.

So, if you got this far, the final step is to set up your live source… in my case, i am using www/src in my repository, but bladamir.com/html

before you run these next commands make sure that you are in your ./html directory!

svn co svn+ssh://serveradmin%@/home/#####/data//trunk/www/src ./

if you already have stuff in your html directory like i did:

svn add ./ –force

svn ci –message “www/src first commit”

all done! if everything worked out, for you, now you can svn up from your html directory via ssh and blam! it’s live. thanks to Husani and Tim for their guidance.
